Our Governors

In accordance with the Government's requirements, the three core strategic functions of The Royal Kent School Governing Body are:

  •  Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

The Full Governing Body meets every term for a formal pre-arranged meeting but the Governors will be in school much more often. They will also be attending committee meetings each half term and other ad hoc meetings called for a variety of reasons. Our Governors are hard working and committed to making RKS a fantastic school for your children and the community.

At our Full Governing Body meetings, we receive and discuss reports from the Headteacher and other members of the senior leadership team and from our various committees. We monitor the results of internal and external assessments of the children's progress and measure the impact of policies which we have adopted to help the school's work.

We oversee and set the school’s financial budget and make sure that we spend wisely. We check to make sure we are receiving good value for the money we spend. We also make sure that the school’s provision complies with current equalities and safeguarding legislation and also that the children and staff have a safe and healthy place to work in. We work as strategic partners with the RKS staff to plan the school’s development whilst maintaining its core vision and ethos.

All Governors also sit on one of the standing committees shown below, in addition to taking on a ‘link’ role in an area of school development.

Pupils and Learning Committee:

This committee considers important information about pupils' achievement and progress in order to ensure RKS provides high quality education and learning for its pupils.

Resources  Committee:

This committee oversees the financial performance of the school and makes sure its money is well spent. We also ensure the school is a safe place for learners and staff and a place that is conducive to good teaching and learning.

RKS Governing Body Structure:
There are twelve governors on the RKS Governing Body (GB) which are made up as follows:
  • Four Coopted Governors who are appointed by the GB
  • Two Parent governors who are elected by the parent body
  • One Staff governor who is elected by the staff body
  • Three Foundation governors: one who is appointed by the Parochial Church Council; one by Guildford Diocesan Board of Education; and the third is the Principal Officiating Minister of Oxshott parish.
  • One Local Authority governor who is nominated by the LA and appointed by the GB
  • The Head teacher is an ex-officio governor by virtue of their office
Any Associate members are appointed by the Governing Body: these persons do not have voting rights at full governing body meetings but do have voting rights at any committee they belong to.
